A reliable, budget-friendly red
Hardys VR Merlot is a smooth, fruit-forward red wine from South Eastern Australia, offering plum and dark cherry flavors with a subtle toasty oak finish. It’s medium-bodied, with low tannins, making it incredibly easy to drink.
At 11% ABV, it’s lighter than many reds, making it a great option for casual sipping. It pairs well with roast meats, pasta and cheeses but is also enjoyable on its own, especially slightly chilled.
For an affordable wine, Hardys VR Merlot delivers good flavor and balance. While it lacks the complexity of premium Merlots, it’s smooth, approachable, and great for everyday drinking.
Pros -
1. Smooth and fruity with low tannins
2. Easy-drinking and versatile
3. Great value for the price
Con -
1. Lacks depth for serious wine drinkers
2. Some may find it slightly too sweet

More merlot please!
We paired this wine with a steak night and it did not disappoint! The dark berry flavours came through brilliantly and really complimented the meal. I just wish the bottle had been bigger as it was so lovely!
Being a casual wine drinker I am not clued up on which reds are better and which is not. This wine was not too heavy and went lovely with my evening meal. I would choose to get this again in the future aswell.
This was a very plesant wine to drink. It was mellow and fruity without being too astringent. It was easy to drink and wasn't too heavy - this would be great with Sunday lunch.
The bottle looks nice and would also be nice to give as a gift.
As far as wines go, this may not be up there with the best, but it holds its own amongst the more affordable options.
The smell and taste were very intense cherry; this was evident straight away, and the flavour was lovely. Very strong dark berries came through instantly, and I got a hint of raspberry even though that wasn't mentioned in the tasting notes.
What lets it down a little is that the flavour doesn't linger. The wine is quite 'thin' with a 'clean' mouth feel, so it's almost like as soon as you've swallowed, the flavours have gone. Other wines feel 'thicker', with the taste lasting longer.
However, what I really loved was the calories. As someone who tracks calorie intake, wine is rarely my first choice due to the fact that they're usually quite calorie dense. I was delighted to see this was 66 cals per 100ml, making it one of the lowest calorie wines out there.
And what's best is that it still manages to be a very respectful 11%!
Will I be buying again? Definitely!
This is a very nice merlot.
I normally drink a stronger wine as I find lower percentages taste more like juice than alcoholic beverages.
11% is normally way too low for my tastes but this was lovely.
It certainly tasted stronger than it was but also very fruity as well.
I will definitely purchase this.
